Review of the season / Captain's report

Tom Wilmot, speaking entirely without notes, waxed eloquently on what was one of the team's better balanced years. The highlights were in the Devon Tour, he felt, with its two hard fought games and brilliant team spirit, which contributed to the great victory at West Alvington on the Sunday. Summoning the fires of the now faded summer, he uttered words of heartfelt appreciation to all who had made another great season possible:

Ricketts for 2 wonderful centuries, all too infrequently seen at this level of cricket
Dipak, for consistency with the bat and the ball (though with surprisingly few wickets)
Malcolm, who with Dipak, kept most opposition teams from scoring to anything near their full potential.

He paid tribute to the excellent part the youngsters had played in making this season special, and he hoped they would come to nets and flourish in 2007. The old lags were nevertheless still holding up and doing the business, Wilmot's own 50 being citied as a particular example. On a less upbeat note, he alluded to the loss of Kevin Copley from the team and thanked those who had tried in vain to convince Kevin to stay.

As the other co-captain, Tim Joyce added that Tom in his opinion had done very well, getting teams out in such a good spirit. He noted that because of this success perhaps it was not a time to bring about radical changes. Colin Thomas was singled out for recognition for his strong contributions this year, second position in the bowling averages being of particular note, as was his hatred of being taken off. Maurice's contributions as backbone of the club continued, with about 60 jobs including treasurer, fixtures secretary and webmaster. Yogesh, who many thought had been lost to love, was welcomed back. His season had been very positive, with good bowling and action of some sort always taking place when he played. On a more personal note, Tim was pleased to see Alan at the meeting. Alan, who had only played a couple of games this season, was very much part of the club's heritage and would hopefully be more involved in 2007.

Tom added that the following shone in the field: Richie, John, Yogi, Dipak, Kieran, Pete Daw. This year saw no repeat of the negative body language of 2005. There was a debt to Simon Hall here, who caught well, dropping only occasionally. The most vivid image remains of his wholehearted and accurate bowling up the hill at Devon. Thanks also to Simon Pajak and John Butterworth for their notable contributions on the Tour.
